The incumbent’s primary focus will be to provide medical social work services to eligible veterans as a means of assisting them to meet biological, psychological, social, and environmental needs, however this social worker will need to also be able to provide a variety of other generalist social work functions.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilitiesIndependently conducts psychosocial assessment of Veterans and their significant others. Identifies symptoms leading to clinical diagnoses and co-occurring disorders. Provides all necessary assessment functions, e.g. interviewing, psychosocial histories, and referrals to aid in the development of treatment plans. Develops comprehensive treatment plans with the Veteran that address the identified symptoms and other co-occurring disorders within a recovery model framework. Works with the Veteran to realize the Veteran’s treatment goals and reassesses and revises goals as indicated by the Veteran’s engagement in treatment. Provides direct EBT for Veterans enrolled in PC. Provide individual, group and family treatment, to include early interventions and supportive follow-up to ensure stability. Will provides recovery-oriented treatment with the goal to support the Veteran independently in the community at the Veteran’s highest level of functioning and quality of life. Will serve as a member of a PC multidisciplinary treatment team. Will provide liaison services with other programs referring Veterans to ensure continuity of care and promote successful transition of Veterans to appropriate programs as necessary. Will provide consultative services to other William C. Tallent & JHQVAMC programs, as needed. Will provide appropriate clinical documentation for all contacts with or about Veterans. Provides training for MH staff regarding PCMHI and available EBTs. Will address Advance Directives and Organ Donation in accordance with the standards of their work area. Utilize the Behavioral Health Laboratory (BHL) to measure program effectiveness and modify service patterns as necessary. They may have certification or other post-master’s degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.* Experience: Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency.* English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).Specialized Experience: Senior Social Worker must have at least two years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice of which, one year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Senior social workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice. Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty.In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:1. Advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. Ability to determine priority for services and provide specialized treatment services.2. Advanced and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management interventions used in the treatment of veterans with polytraumatic injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.3. Advanced knowledge and expert skill in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services. Ability to coordinate the delivery of specialized psychosocial services and programs. Ability to design system changes based on empirical findings.4. treatment of patients treated in the specialty area, rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills. Ability to teach and mentor staff and students in the specialty area of practice and to provide supervision for licensure or for specialty certifications.5. Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, demonstrating innovation in the creation of new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention to identify and address specialized clinical needs. Ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the specialty population or specialty treatment program.Grade Determinations:Differentiating Full Performance Level from Advanced Practice Level. This is done based on the differences between independent practice, which is required for all VHA social workers, and advanced practice. A social worker practicing at the independent level has a generalized knowledge of practice, whereas the social worker practicing at the advanced level has specialized knowledge of practice typically related to a particular diagnosis or patient population. The advanced practice social worker can be further differentiated from the independent practice social worker by his/her ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, provide consultation and guidance to colleagues, role model effective social work practice skills, teach or provide orientation to less experienced social workers, develop innovations in practice interventions, and provide clinical supervision for social work licensure or certification. A social worker with advanced practice skills and personal qualifications that meet the standard for the Senior Social Worker will have passed an advanced generalist or clinical ASWB examination and be assigned to a position that requires use of the advanced practice skills in order to be considered for the senior social worker grade.References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II Appendix G39, Social WorkerThe actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is the GS-12.Physical Requirements: The work requires extreme patience and controlling of emotions. The work may also require assisting physically disabled veterans. Day-lo-day work involves sitting. walking, standing and carrying light objects, such as medical records and substantial computer entry. Work is typically performed in a setting that may expose the incumbent lo the communicable diseases common of the client population. Most work is performed in a setting away from the office, where the environment cannot be controlled. Travel may be to unsafe locations in fulfilling outreach and education functions. The Incumbent is required to drive a government car in fulfilling his/her assignment.
